this project was made to raise awareness and to create incentive for use of PPE equipment in workplace environments. Priority when designing was considering unmet physical and emotional needs of industry workers, such as comfort, durability, accuracy of protection and accessibility.
Incentive is the primary objective of this design. Incentive for brands and manufactures to produce. Incentive for companies advocate and buy. Most of all, incentive for workers to WANT to use.
Problem space:
Unworn Personal Protective Equipment due to Unmet physical and emotional needs of industry workers
Research
PPE is a workers last defence against injury and death, when eliminating workplace hazards is not possible.
The primary design objective is creating incentive for use of PPE in all workplace environments.
Considering unmet physical and emotional needs of industry workers, such as, comfort, durability, accuracy of protection needed and accessibility.

9% of all injuries are head injuries - 84% of employees who sustain a head injury are not wearing protection
50% of construction workers will suffer a serious eye injury during their career - 90% of all workplace eye injuries are preventable with the use of proper safety eyewear
25% of all workplace accidents involve hands and fingers - 60% wearing gloves reduces hand injuries
25% of workers are regularly exposed to noises at or above recommended limits - 99% of noise induced hearing loss is preventable if proper hearing protection is used

insights from collaborators
Scott de Leeuw
Branch Manager at CAT Finning
At Finning although many daily tasks are preformed in office setting Scott is no stranger to having to wear PPE on site and managing staff who are required to wear PPE at all times. Scott was able to give great insight into the struggles and worries of injury prevention and injuries in the workplace.
Giulio Del Bianco
Automotive Collision Technician at Still Creek Collision
On a daily basis Giulio works with chemicals, heavy machinery and tools. For most tasks preformed throughout his day he is required to wear PPE, from gloves to hearing protection to masks. The insight given helped me empathize and have a new perspective on PPE and where it may be lacking.
Co-Creation Toolkit
This toolkit was created to gain perspective and understanding around the workplace and wearing PPE. As well as any unmet needs in current PPE equipment and any new ideas on how to improve or build upon current gear.
With both Scott an Giulio we went through the toolkit beginning with a questionnaire, a response to images that included workplace scenarios and PPE equipment and story boarding wearing and removing PPE looks like and ways in which it could be improved upon.

stems form the word binary, by definition it means, double or made up of two parts
Binal believes in bringing together safety + incentive to create advanced PPE for industry workers
Binal
has teamed up with beats by dre to create safety headphones + app service for industry workers
collaborating with spotify these headphones include access to spotify streaming while at work

lo-fi user flow
Prototyping the user flow above took many ideation of what should be on the app and what had no place being on the app to how the screens flowed from one to the next. From button styles to eliminating unnecessary words icons and features we exhaust all options until desired user flow.
